High energy processes in microquasars
نویسنده
چکیده
Microquasars are X-ray binary stars with the capability to generate relativistic jets. It is expected that microquasars are γ-ray sources, because of the analogy with quasars and because the theoretical models predict emission at such energy range. In addition, from observational arguments, there are two microquasars that appear as the possible counterparts for two unidentified high-energy γ-ray sources.

The proton low-mass microquasar: high-energy emission
Context. A population of unidentified gamma-ray sources is forming a structure resembling a halo around the Galactic center. These sources are highly variable, and hence they should be associated with compact objects. Microquasars are objects undergoing accretion with relativistic jets; if such an object has a low-mass, evolved, donor star, it might be found in the Galactic halo. If these low-m...

Galactic microquasars are certainly one of the most recent additions to the field of high energy astrophysics and have attracted increasing interest over the last decade. However, the high energy part of the spectrum of microquasars is the most poorly known, mainly due the lack of sensitive instrumentation in the past. Microquasars are now primary targets for all of the observatories working in...

Radio and X-ray observations of the relativistic jets of microquasars show evidence for the acceleration of particles to very high energies. Signatures of non-thermal processes occurring closer in to the compact object can also be found. In addition, three binaries are now established emitters of high (>100 MeV) and/or very high (>100 GeV) energy gamma-rays. High-energy emission can originate f...

Microquasars (MQs) are potential candidates to produce a non-negligible fraction of the observed galactic cosmic rays. The protons accelerated at the jet termination shock interact with the interstellar medium and may produce extended emission detectable at different energy bands through several processes: neutral pion-decay produce high-energy and very high-energy gammarays, secondary electron...

The high energy emission of microquasars is thought to originate from high energy particles. Depending on the spectral state, the distribution of these particles can be thermal with a high temperature (typically 100 keV) or non-thermal and extending to even higher energy. The properties of high energy plasmas are governed by a rich microphysics involving particle-particle collisions and particl...
